On to the NXT One – Battle Royal Edition (Oct. 15)

Usually the post Takeover shows don’t impress me, but I can’t same the same for last night. Not only did they address what happened at the special, they built on it. Normally NXT has a habit of showing more highlights than story progression.

Opening Segment

I’ve expressed in the past that I’m not a big fan of Bayley’s promo skills. Apart from that, I did enjoy the content of her promo, as it was genuine. As much as I hate Blake & Murphy, I can’t recall the last time I was this excited to hear their music drop, and thankfully it was for Alexa. I personally felt Bliss made this segment amazing, because she truly found a way to bring out her heel character. After Takeover I wasn’t sure how the women’s division would turn out, but this promo made me excited for this potential feud.

The Vaudevillians vs Angelo Dawkins & Sawyer Fulton

Since Takeover Brooklyn, I feel the Vaudevillians haven’t received enough attention. Every time I see them I’m reminded of how they hold NXT gold. With this being the case, I have a hard time investing in any of their matches. The two didn’t even compete at Takeover Respect. I felt the same as Corey Graves, impressed with their in ring, but not entertained.

Evie vs Nia Jax

I’ve never seen Jax wrestle, but I was extremely excited to see what she brought to the table. Considering it was her debut, I didn’t think Evie stood much of a chance. This was a squash match I truly enjoyed. My eyes couldn’t leave the screen as Nia impressed me with her monster type character.

Number One Contender Battle Royal

I can’t remember the last time a battle royal has felt this important, so I was pumped to see how this would end. Similar to the Royal Rumble, I knew right away this would be a difficult match to review because of how busy it would be. Similar to most matches like this, the end result was quite predictable. I’d imagine this match would be more enjoyable in person .This made me wonder why they didn’t just hold a fatal four way of the top guys in NXT. Had there been more top end stars, I’d be left on the edge of my seat, because the clear favorites were Crews, Breeze, Joe, and Corbin. Also, it came across as these top guys beating up on all of the mid to low carders. Criticism aside, I did find this match entertaining, as it was easy to watch. The wrestling didn’t  need to be top notch but it had to be chaotic. Believe it or not, I didn’t think Crews would end up winning this match. The man is extremely talented but I didn’t think he’d be pushed this hard right away. My money was on Samoa Joe just because he has history with Balor. Regardless of my thoughts, it was smart for them to book Apollo as the winner, simply because the crowd was behind him. The WWE has had a tough time building babyfaces, but I Crews might be their solution.

Looking back at this episode of NXT, I noticed they followed a simple formula. Storyline was progressed and so was character development. With this being said, I felt they used a lot of time on the battle royal and video packages. The low point of the show was easily the Vaudevillians match, while the high point was the opening segment. Overall, I give this show a 7.5/10.

  1. I didn’t like Nia’s debut. I don’t like squash matches. All I saw was Big Show like performance and as you might know, that’s not good. Unless she has real wrestling skills, she’ll get boring real soon. They did the same with Corbin and they are still trying to fix that. Is like they never learn. Azuka debut was way more better.

Agree on The Vaudevillians, they won’t hold those belts for long, but the division is so weak, who would take the belts from them?

Besides that it was a good show. I think I was more harsh on Ni’s debut on the score, but pretty close.
